Hinomaru Yosegaki Imperial Japanese Navy "Good Luck Flag" Period: Second World War Size: 183x108cm On the hoist section is clearly written in Japanese the good luck official message. This flag was for the Japanese Imperial Navy warship, reputably from the "Chitose" which was a Japanese light aircraft carrier, laid down 1934 and sunk 1944. The flag was a symbolic message to all crew who sailed on the carrier. The flag was only used at the ceremony of setting sail after which it was carefully folded and safely stowed. Similar smaller flags were given to all Japanese soldiers and airmen who had the flags written on with blessings from family and friends.
